Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the energy efficiency of a log home?
A: Studies conducted by the National Bureau of Standards have shown that logs are naturally energy efficient. Log's are rated by thermal mass. Thermal mass measures a material's capacity to absorb, store, and slowly release heat over time when temperatures drop. Logs do this very well because of their cellular structure, bulk, and thickness.
Q: What type of logs do you use?
A: At RJ Olson Log Homes we are able to provide a variety of log styles. Swedish cope, full round, hand scribed, and tongue and groove logs are available. Our western whitewoods are cut when they are dead, standing, and dry. When a log is dry there is much less chance of unexpected cracking and deformities. Air dried log homes have less settling problems than a kiln dried log home or especially less than a green (not dry) log home.
Q: What is the average square foot cost of a log home?
A: Because there are many factors involved, this is a difficult question. Determinate factors include log size, style, quality, house plans, fixtures, and flooring, to name a few. You have ultimate control over the final costs of your home. Bob will help guide you with suggestions on building a cost efficient log home without sacrificing quality. Today, log homes can be very competitive with custom conventional homes of like quality.
Q: Would we be able to just purchase our logs from RJ Olson Log Homes?
A: Yes, if you desire only the log package we would be happy to assist you with your order.
